Endoplasmic Reticulum

Concept Explanation

Endoplasmic Reticulum

It is a network of tubules and channels and is involved in the synthesis, storage, and transport of cell products. The endoplasmic reticulum is a network of tube-like structures running through the cytoplasm. Some parts are connected to the nuclear membrane, while others are connected to the cell membrane. It is of two types: rough and smooth endoplasmic reticulum.

  • Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum (RER) : It contains ribosomal substances because of which its surface is rough. The ribosomes are the sites of protein synthesis.
  • Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum (SER) : it helps to manufacture fats or lipids. Its surface is smooth becuase of absence of ribosomes.
